Intent

French Intent

  • At Thurgoland School we recognise the value of learning and speaking different languages. Our French curriculum aims to instil a love of language learning and awareness of other cultures. We aim for all our children to give it a go and develop their confidence to communicate in French for practical purposes, using both written and spoken French.  Throughout our curriculum, we aim to give the children a foundation for learning a language that encourages pupils to aim high and enables them to be resilient. The curriculum design aspires for all children to apply their skills to learning further languages, developing strong understanding of language, facilitating future study and opening opportunities to study and work in other countries in the future.

At Thurgoland we intend to:

  • We want make sure pupils are aiming high and make progress, acquiring and applying key knowledge to meet agreed expectations.
  • Provide opportunities to celebrate languages e.g., themed French dinner and provide extra-curricular opportunities for learning French.
  • Provide high quality teaching to ensure children enjoy learning and have the confidence to give it a go, when learning French.

Implementation

The teaching of French begins in Year 3 and continues up to Year 6, building up on the previous knowledge learnt and introducing new topics. The same lesson structure is used in every year group. There are six units per year group with a topic focus for each, children will learn French through a themed approach e.g., colours, family, the home and build on their vocabulary and understand as they progress through Key Stage 2.

Lessons begin with a phonics modelled by a person speaking French on the screen and by the teaching staff, then a recap and review of the previous lesson looking at the Key Vocabulary/ grammar. Next is the ‘Attention grabber’ followed by the ‘Main Event’ and then the ‘Wrapping up’ section.

Throughout the lesson the teaching staff speak as much French as they are able in between the activities. There are a variety of activities to complete and lots of practical activities to inspire the children’s love of learning. Each lesson plan is linked to the National Curriculum and progressive within each year group and unit.

Equalities

All children at Thurgoland have an equal entitlement to access the curriculum and make progress in order to be their best self.

Inclusion

Subject leaders will work alongside SENCO and teachers to ensure that pupils with special educational needs, EHCPs and school focused plans will access the appropriate curriculum and reasonable adjustments will be planned and implemented by class teachers.

Where applicable children’s SEND paperwork will incorporate suitable objectives from the National Curriculum.

Intervention Groups will take place in order to give further support to children working below national expectations.

Greater Depth Children

Within lessons teachers provide activities to stretch and challenge children who are more able.
