Physical Education

At Thurgoland our aim is for children to experience a broad and balanced curriculum enhanced through the use of GetSet4PE and to support the development of pupil’s coordination, balance, agility and apply these skills to a range of sports. Dance is taught through cross curricular links to engage our pupils and celebrate their love for learning through all subjects, we use Imoves to support the teaching of Dance across school. Our curriculum demonstrates a holistic approach to physical education developing both the physical elements of PE but also promoting social, emotional and cognitive skills.

As a Church of England School every aspect of the school’s work is underpinned by Christian values. PE is seen as a key subject in providing opportunities for expressing feelings, values and teamwork, with a particular focus around co-operation, fairness and trust. Through this subject, pupils will learn about service, dedication and resilience, and develop a ‘growth mind-set’.

Intent

At Thurgoland we intend to:

  • To develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
  • To ensure all children are physically active for sustained periods of time.
  • To engage in competitive sports and activities with a positive attitude and compete with a sense of fair play.
  • To develop skills, attitudes and understanding to enable all children to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
  • To promote and develop safe practise in physical activities.
  • To provide all children, regardless of race, gender, background or ability the equality of opportunity to succeed in all areas of P.E.
  • To provide opportunity, through exciting and stimulating challenges, developing continuity and progression, for all children to achieve their full potential.
  • To develop confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses

Dance

  • To encourage children to gain confidence in and enjoyment from dance.
  • To develop children’s use of vocabulary and correct terminology in dance.
  • To promote positive attitudes, physical activity and healthy lifestyles.
  • To develop personal and social skills through creating, performing and evaluating both as individuals and as members of a group.
  • To link with other curriculum areas as much as possible.
  • To promote cultural awareness through the experience of various existing dance traditions.
  • To address social and moral issues by communicating through movement.

Implementation

  • Long term: National Curriculum
  • Medium term: GetSet4PE and Imoves. The subject leader has written a medium-term plan for each class to outline the sequence of the teaching of the units.
  • Short Term: Short term planning is supported by the schemes GetSet4PE and Imoves.
  • A typical PE lesson will provide the opportunity for all children, regardless of their ability, to:
  • Introductory warm up activities. (These will, wherever possible, be based on the activity to follow, provide opportunities to review/reinforce skills previously learnt, and introduce the learning objectives for the lesson.)
  • Opportunities for children to review their current ability/skill prior to the lesson.
  • Activities that support the acquisition and development of skills and understanding.
  • Activities that allow the children to select and apply the skills, knowledge and understanding.
  • Opportunities for children to extend and challenge their ability and skills.
  • Concluding /cooling down activities.
  • During each lesson children will be provided with opportunities to self-assess/peer assess their skills and review targets.
  • Teaching strategies will vary as is seen appropriate during any lesson between whole class, group and individual activities. Equipment and activities will be differentiated and/or adapted to extend, challenge and accommodate all levels of ability. Feedback will be constructive and frequent.

Time Allocation

EYFS through to Year 6 are allocated 2 sessions lasting at least 50-60 minutes.  All classes are offered, and then timetabled morning and/or afternoon sessions.  Within the EYFS classroom, physical development is also supplemented by their provision within the classroom developing their physical development. During the academic year, pupils are also given additional sporting activity opportunities outside of the intended 2 hours of PE standard.

Equalities

All children at Thurgoland have an equal entitlement to access the curriculum and make progress in order to be their best self.

Inclusion

Subject leaders will work alongside SENCO and teachers to ensure that pupils with special educational needs, EHCPs and school focused plans will access the appropriate curriculum and reasonable adjustments will be planned and implemented by class teachers.

Where applicable children’s SEND paperwork will incorporate suitable objectives from the National Curriculum.

Intervention Groups will take place in order to give further support to children working below national expectations.

Greater Depth Children

Within lessons teachers provide activities to stretch and challenge children who are more able.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Extra-curricular activities are provided for all year groups throughout the school, activities vary according to the time of year and are taken on by qualified, able, and committed staff/adults. These coaching sessions and extra-curricular activities are not a statutory part of the National Curriculum but are seen as an opportunity to further develop skills and interests, through enhancing the provision for sport and physical exercise for all our pupils. They are also an integral part of connecting our pupils to local sporting clubs within our community and encouraging children to explore a wide range of sports.

Sports Leaders

Year 6 pupils are trained annually as Sports Leaders – to supplement the work of the Lunchtime P.E. Supervisors. Sports Leaders plan and deliver a range of sporting activities/games which reinforce core skills for physical development and engage children in additional physical exercise for enjoyment.

Playtime equipment boxes are also provided to encourage individual and small group activities during playtimes and lunch times, which are pupil led.
