Class 1 - The Peaceful Pandas

The Class 1 Team is made up of Mrs Gilder (Teacher), Mrs Stacey (HLTA) and Mrs Marrison (Teaching Assistant).

The classroom is located at the top of the corridor, between Class R and Class 2.

In Class 1 we try to fill each other’s buckets with kindness and thoughtfulness every day

In Class One, we love learning. We are a team and we look after each other. We strive to show kindness and thoughtfulness every day. We all know each other really well; we have big hearts and big personalities. In Class 1 we have a real ‘love for learning’ and this is shown when you walk through our classroom door. The children in Class 1 are hooked into their learning and are striving to ‘be their best selves.’ Starting the year off in the Autumn Term we learn about our local area- Thurgoland of course! We go on short walks to spot human and physical features for our geography lessons, then we go on a hunt to compare old and new buildings in history. We learn all about ourselves in science as part of our animal topic. We also study humans and how we change as we get older. We learn about our 5 senses and other aspects of ourselves in PHSE. In Science for Autumn 2, we learn about Our pets and classify animals into the 5 main groups: birds, mammals, fish, amphibians and reptiles. In Art, we learn about a range of artists starting off with Picasso and create abstract art using self-portraits. As we head towards the festivities at Christmas, we aim high in our Nativity to be our best selves and put on an amazing show in the Holy Trinity Church. We also enjoy designing, creating and evaluating our very own Snowmen finger puppets! In Music, we learn to keep the pulse, learn about tempo, dynamics and rhythms as patterns of long and short sounds, then learn how to make changes to our voices using high and low sounds when exploring ‘pitch’ in music. In PE, we develop our ball skills, our competence in gymnastics and also dance. We hone our skills in net and wall games and develop our striking and fielding techniques.

We have some lovely grown-ups who help us in class every week, they especially love listening to us read.

As we enter the New Year into the Spring Term, we aim high and explore new vocabulary, as we learn all about toys that our Grandparents played with, writing reports about them and inviting them into our class to have fun playing and learning about toys from the past. We also love to learn about animals from around the world and in our local environment. We visit the Yorkshire Wildlife Park to really bring our learning to life.  In Science, we explore the Wonderful Weather, consider seasonal changes and how the weather changes through them. We consider what grows in our gardens, we look at different types of gardens and how to grow chit potatoes and beans. In DT, we spend time learning about healthy foods and where they come from around the world. We then create our very own fruit animal kebabs and evaluate them. Our next artist is Jackson Pollock where we have the chance to use his techniques and create our own splatter pictures.

Finally, towards the Summer Term, we head back in time to learn all about The Wright Brothers and their amazing adventures. We also find out about Amy Johnson and her solo flight! We create a moving picture based on our DT learning around pop up books and fly our planes across the page.  Our final artist of the year is Joan Miro. This unit allows us to develop our skills to create a paper sculpture in the style of the artist. In Summer term, in science we learn about everyday materials and their properties. In PE, we develop our net and wall games skills and learn different striking and fielding techniques then finish off with Athletics in preparation for Sports Day.  Lastly, at the end of the year, we learn all about the seaside with a visit to Cleethorpes to answer the question ‘Why do we love the seaside so much? We believe in Class 1 we should celebrate and show respect to all; therefore, take great joy in participating in theme days and week such as Black History Month, anti-bullying and E-safety. We develop our pupils to be respectful, empathetic and understanding through learning how to express ourselves, keep ourselves and others safe and living together in the wider world. Throughout the year we aim to go on trips and we have visitors into school to enhance our curriculum. We have workshops with authors from books that we are familiar with. When learning about our local area we go on short walks to enhance our learning. Class 1 is where learning is exciting and where we all strive to show the best version of our self in all that we do.
